This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – Canton, Comstock, and an Alamo City Oktoberfest

September 27, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

On this week’s episode of The Texas Bucket List we’re rolling through the Lone-Star State hunting down a one of a kind shopping experience, making a new friend who really knows how to fix a burger, and getting in touch with our German side at an Oktoberfest celebration in San Antonio.

First, we explore all sorts of unique finds in Canton at the First Monday Trade Days. While here we meet some of the people who make Canton well worth a stop and learn about the history behind this Texas sized shopping experience.

Next, our taste buds make a new friend in the Devil’s Burger, and we make a friend in the man behind this tasty treasure, Duke Gould, owner of J&P Bar and Grill. After realizing his friends enjoyed coming to his man cave for free food, Duke decided to try his hand at the restaurant business, and we’re sure glad he did. Once you see the Devil’s Burger, you will be, too.

We end this week in San Antonio where we celebrate Oktoberfest with the Beethoven Maennerchor. There may be Oktoberfest parties all over the Lone-Star State but this one has been around since the 1860s. This celebration brings smiles to beer drinking, bratwurst loving, braggadocios Texans of every decent.

So grab your wallet, load up your taste buds, get your beer stein ready, and prepare yourself for some Texas sized fun.

This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – Fort Duncan in Eagle Pass, The Post in Corpus Christi & Chuy’s in Van Horn

September 19, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

This week on The Texas Bucket List we take a Texas sized road trip to learn a little Civil War history, give our stamp of approval to a good old fashioned burger, and get the play by play on one of John Madden’s favorite Texas eateries.

First stop, Fort Duncan in Eagle Pass where cultures have combined.  With the U.S. Army’s presence here since 1849, a border shared with Mexico, and rich historical roots, it’s safe to say Fort Duncan is well worth a stop.

Next we head on down to Corpus Christi, where we find a Post Office building that now serves as a unique burger joint. Over at The Post, they deliver simple but good burgers that are sure to leave you licking your lips.

We end our road trip this week in Van Horn, at the original restaurant named Chuy’s. The food here is a real touchdown, but you don’t have to take our word for it. John Madden visits this West Texas eatery multiple times a year, and the list of celebrities who agree with this statement goes on and on.

So get ready to feast your eyes on some of the Lone-Star States best treasures this week as we continue to bring you everything there is to see, do, and experience in Texas.

This Week on The Texas Bucket List – Big Bend Beer, A Burger in the Valley and a Long Burning Bulb!

September 12, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

Beer, burgers, bad luck, and light bulbs, this may sound like an odd combination of words that start with the letter b, but that’s exactly what this week’s episode of The Texas Bucket List is made of.

We start our weekly travels out in West Texas, where we find the most remote brewery in the continental United States. With a wide variety of exceptional thirst quenching beers, the Big Bend Brewing Company is truly one heck of a find.

Next we sink our teeth into a burger with a flavor profile the size of Texas at the Orchard Lounge in McAllen. The Concha Burger is sure to excite every taste bud in your mouth, and leave you ready to pack your bags for a trip to the Valley.

Finally we stop in at a historic part of the Fort Worth Stockyards were we not only learn a little about what was once the sight of the third largest stockyards in the nation, but have some light shed on the light bulb that’s been burning for 108 years and the bad luck wedding dress.

So, brace yourself to have a ball as we bounce around the lone star state finding some of the stops that make it bigger and better than any other in this week’s episode of The Texas Bucket List.

This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – La Lomita Park, Billy B’s and the Fort Griffin Fandangle

May 10, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

This week on The Texas Bucket List we slip into our dancing shoes, loosen our belts for a gut busting burger made with bodacious beef, and grab a front row seat at a theatrical production dedicated to all things Texas.

First we find ourselves tapping our feet in La Lomita Park to the Sunday treat of Conjunto music played by Pepe Maldonado. The sound of South Texas comes together and resonates off the walls of La Lomita. Built in 2000 by Pepe, this dance hall fills a lifelong dream and serves as McAllen’s Luckenbach according to Pepe.

Next we shuffle off to Groesbeck where we sink our teeth into one heck of a burger. Billy B’s Sale Barn Café serves as a gathering place for the community of Groesbeck, and turns out about 12 hundred burgers in a four day week. As Sherriff Wilson of Groesbeck pointed out, when the Sherriff gives his seal of approval to a restaurant, you know the food is good!

We end this week with a show, or a Fandangle to be more exact, in Albany. This show has been a Texas tradition since 1937, and is full of Texas spirit, history, pride and musical numbers. The Fort Griffin Fandangle has been teaching Shackleford County history to many generations, and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

So get ready to boogie, feast, and experience theatrics Texas style. Don’t go kickin’ the bucket, because this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

This week on The Texas Bucket List we fill up at a stop on Route 66 that’s helped travelers keep going 1936, sink our teeth into a hamburger you might be surprised to find on the border, and catch up with a band that’s been around since 1860.

Our first stop might leave you thinking you’re in Cars Land at a Disney theme park, because Tower Station in Shamrock Texas served as inspiration for the filling station in the Cars move. This Texas gem located just 15 miles from the Oklahoma border has a history you wont want to miss learning about.

At the other end of the state, we find ourselves in downtown Brownsville where we eat a burger so good, people cross the boarder daily to refuel on them. You won’t find tacos at Rutledge Burger, but you will find some darn good burgers.

We end this weeks travels in Boerne where we enjoy music with deep Texas roots and German lineage preformed every other Tuesday in June and July. As the Boerne Village Band starts playing the crowed starts swaying as the sun goes down in Central Texas.

This weekend the 100th Episode of The Texas Bucket List!

April 24, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

On the 100th episode of The Texas Bucket List we’re stopping at a watering hole in College Station with a unique dedication to service, a general store serving up one heck of a burger, and a tramway with a view so fantastic you’ll have to see it to believe it.

Our first stop is in Aggieland, where there is no shortage of veteran appreciation. At The West End Elixer Company, this town’s military pride is amplified. Owned and operated by a Marine veteran, this watering hole tends to serve as a welcoming place for veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These guys are not only serving up exceptional service and appreciation, but their drinks are artistically made, too.

The burger of the week comes with a side of community bonding at The Kenney Store. This joint is best known for its atmosphere and down home cooking, so just imagine how delicious this burger will be! To our surprise, they serve us a burger you probably haven’t eaten in your mama’s kitchen, but boy was it good. The spinach artichoke burger is a taste of heaven between two buns, and the people sharing the room with you at The Kenney Store are top notch.

This 100th episode of The Texas Bucket List comes to a close in El Paso, where we hop onto a tramway built in 1959. The views from the Wyler Aeriel Tramway are truly breath taking. With a simple four minute ride over half a mile on a gondola we find ourselves at the top of the summit that overlooks the West Texas town of El Paso and more! From here we can see just how blessed we truly are to call ourselves Texans.

This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – A Botanical Garden, a Big Burger in Big D, and Battleship Texas

April 1, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

This week on The Texas Bucket List we’re feasting with our eyes in a botanical garden in Orange, our hearts and stomachs at a burger joint in Dallas, and our patriotic minds in La Porte on Battleship Texas.

As we travel through the Shangri la Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange we feel connected to both nature and our swampy neighbors next door. We’re reminded just how beautiful nature can be, even if it houses a few alligators and snakes.

Our next stop is Wingfield’s, a burger joint using a scientifically calculated burger assembly method in Dallas. Owned by a former biology teacher and one of his former students, Wingfield’s earned a spot on the top 100 burgers in Big D. The story behind these burgers will warm your heart, and the passion with which they’re made will leave your stomach full and your mouth turned up in a grin.

We finish our weekly travels on Battleship Texas in La Porte. This over 100-year-old Texas gem truly embodies the spirit of Texas as the last surviving US battleship to have fought in both world wars. A tour through the ship leaves us fired up about Texas, US, and world history.

There are more stops in Texas than any Texan can say grace over, but these are three you won’t want to miss. So, join us this week as we enjoy these Lone Star State treasures.

March 27, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

This week on The Texas Bucket List we’re sure to bowl a strike, join a rascally club while we grub, and catch new fishing friends in beautiful Texas town on the coast.

We start this weeks travels in Arlington where we pin down the history of bowling and meet some professional bowling coaches who work with Olympic bowlers from around the globe.  The International Bowling Museum truly has a little something for everyone, and teaches us the link between the Egyptians, beer, and modern Olympians.

In Lubbock we find it hard not to join the He-Man-Woman-Hater burger club at a restaurant craftily named, Spanky’s.  One bite of the He-Man-Woman-Hater burger will have us all singing, ‘I’ve got a burger. I’ve got a burger. Hey, hey, hey!’

We end our travels in Port Mansfield, a friendly fishing community that time forgot. Here we catch a plethora of fish, eat our fresh catch in one of Port Mansfield’s four restaurants, and form new friendships that will last a lifetime.
