This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – Blessings, Burgers, and Booze

February 26, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

This week on The Texas Bucket List we count our blessings, pig out, and raise our glass to Texas as we travel across the lone star state.

At a historic hotel in Blessing we make friends with a cook, a historian, and gentlemen worth counting twice in our blessings. The routine in this small town brings regulars into the hotel dining area before the break of dawn, and the food made by one blessing of a cook has people lining the streets for lunch every day of the year except Christmas.

In Waco we go hog wild at Captain Billy Whizzbang’s, a restaurant with a story as wild as the burgers they serve. The Whizz-pigg, a burger made with two patties of 50/50 bacon and beef, puts us in hog heaven and leaves our taste buds squealing.

We end our trip with a toast in Sandia, Texas where we visit the first vodka distillery south of San Antonio, Wild Rag Vodka. After meeting Roy, the man who started the distillery, and tasting his vodka we believe his dad was right when he said, “This is God’s country.”

This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – Celebrating Sam, Tolbert’s, and the Austin Toy Museum

February 21, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

This week on The Texas Bucket List, we get in touch with our inner child at the Austin Toy Museum, celebrate Lone Star State hero’s like they do in Huntsville, and tantalize our cosmic cowboy taste buds with a burger topped with a famous chili in Grapevine.

We start our episode celebrating in a way only Texans and those soon to become Texans can at Sam Houston’s Birthday Celebration in Huntsville.  The nostalgia, history, and spirit of the event are sure to leave you proud to call yourself a Texan.

Swimming may not be a winter sport in Texas, but eating a burger swimming in chili is a year round must. At our next stop we take on the Terligua burger, a burger swimming in chili with a connection to Terlingua that is out of this world.

Everything is bigger in Texas, including the kid in all of us.  We round out our trip bringing out our inner child at The Austin Toy Museum where we feast our eyes on toy displays featuring thousands of popular toys from years past including Star Wars, Transformers, fully functioning arcade games, and more.

This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – Tanks, Tasty Burgers, and Terrific Treats!

February 6, 2017 by Shane McAuliffe

Howdy and welcome to a new season of The Texas Bucket List!

This week we’re rolling through Texas in a Sherman Tank, fueling our Texas size appetites with a burger featured on the cover of a state wide magazine, and discovering a sweet treat with a Cajun calling right here in the Lone Star State.

We’ll start this episode off with a bang when we pull out the big guns, or should I say tanks, at Drive Tanks in Uvalde. The guys at DriveTanks.com let us get up close and personal with the fully restored pieces of history they’ve collected. If walking a day in another man’s shoes gives you a better idea of what his life is like just wait until you see what happens when we drive and shoot these tanks.

Next our taste buds get a taste of a famously featured burger when we sink our teeth into the Cover Burger at the Alamo Springs Cafe.  Named for its nearly famous appearance on the cover of a magazine, this burger is one you don’t want to miss.

Our final stop at Rao’s Bakery in Beaumont is sure to get your sweet tooth fired up with their specialty coffee, desserts, and King Cake.  The bakery that’s been serving Southeast Texas for over 70 years is sure to leave a smile on your face and a bit of European style café love in your heart.

This Week on The Texas Bucket List – Elvis, Old Orange Cafe Burger, and Old RIp

December 5, 2016 by Shane McAuliffe

This week we’re bringing you a burger from an old café in southeast Texas along with two stops to meet some legendary figures on both the state and national scene that might just get you all shook up.

Our first stop is in Los Fresnos, home to a miniature musical mecca known as Little Graceland. Built in the memory of the King of rock & roll and put together by a friend of Presley’s from his stint in the Army, the annual Elvis Festival held every January is one you won’t want to miss.

For our next stop, we pull into the Old Orange Café for one spicy Fiesta Burger. The building was once a pasteurizing dairy, which might be a good thing if you’re a little sensitive to the heat!

Court Nance will play us a tune and well hop on over to Eastland where you can cross paths with a reptile that’s made headlines around the country. Old Rip, famous for his alleged 31-year sleep, now rests in eternal slumber at the Eastland County Courthouse.

This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – A Dutch Windmill, a Darling Dive in Weatherford, and Don Pedrito

November 29, 2016 by Shane McAuliffe

On this week’s episode of The Texas Bucket List a delightful Dutch windmill, a drive-in diner that’s hasn’t changed since 1958, and south Texas faith healer that is a generational tradition.

Our first stop is at the Nederland Texas Windmill Museum, which has more to offer than just the scaffolding of windmills of old. This museum holds the winds of history  for the town, from its native Hollanders that first braved the Texas heat to their wooden shoes in which they worked the fields.

Driving into the Malt Shop in Weatherford, we traveled back to a time when cars with chrome and poodle skirts reigned supreme. They’ve even got quite the cheeseburger and malt that have remained as fixtures of good eats from back in the day.

Lucas Eason sings “Sixth and Trinity” at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos and we close thins out with south Texas legend.  The shrine of Don Pedrito in Falfurrias has been a site for folks to come and pray or meditate for healing since his death in 1907.  Known as a local faith healer, some say that he continues to heal and alleviate the pains those who visit the shrine today.

This Weekend on The Texas Bucket List – Trophy Barber Shop, Phoenix Saloon, and Hueco Tanks State Park

November 8, 2016 by Shane McAuliffe

This week on The Texas Bucket List, we travel out on the range, munch at a modern saloon, and freshen up at a barber shop with some animalistic observers.

Because mom’s always saying we need one, we get presentable at the Trophy Barber Shop in Baytown under the watchful eyes of the taxidermied wall residents that make this barber shop a hunter’s hair salon dream come true.

For lunch we grab some grub at the Phoenix Saloon in New Braunfels and this 1871 bar boasts bragging rights and the claim to fame for creating chili powder, and their chili burger is worth the trip to the Comal River city.

Next singer Kimberly Dunn performs her country song “High Horse” at the Grand Stafford in Bryan.

Our last stop transports us back in time at the Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site in El Paso. You’ll want to take a road trip not just for the rolling West Texas views but the hundreds of years’ worth of history harbored in these hillsides. From 1800s graffiti to ancient water god drawings, Hueco Tanks still serves as the hot place to stop as you travel west across the Lone Star State.
