The Texas Bucket List – Woerner Cafe in Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is full of fine places to eat, but at the Woerner Café, they somehow manage to take freshness to a whole new level. “A lot of places here really are German centered or very heavy food,” said Bobby Keen-Hammond. “We really pride ourselves in fresh and light ingredients.”
Bobby has been working at Woerner since 2013. Owners Angela Mancino and Jamie Luckey depend on him to keep the restaurant running smoothly. “Jamie and Angela are great people,” said Bobby. “Angela is a mentor of mine. She’s really taught me a lot. Not only about the restaurant business, about just business in general.”
Making sure all the food comes out fresh is first and foremost on his list. “With our menu, it being so eclectic, it really helps bring people together,” said Bobby. “I always joke around, I’m like, imagine working here. It’s all the self-control, all the time.”
But it’s not all healthy here. The Woerner Café also has some pizza’s that pull their own weight. “We use all house-made dough for all of our pizzas,” said Bobby. “All of our meats and veggies are coming fresh and they’re sliced in-house too.”
Then there’s the pie, something that started Woerner’s well loved reputation. “Key lime pie and coconut cream pie, those are kind of our staples,” said Bobby.
Back in the kitchen, co-owner Jamie Luckey thinks back to how she got started in this business with Angela, a longtime friend and the other owner. “We’ve known each other since we were 14,” said Jamie. “We went to high school together. So she was trying to get me out here, trying to get me out here, and then finally one day I said, ‘I’m coming.’”
Jamie’s specialty is pizza.“To get a good pizza is kind of hard sometimes, and I feel like we perfected it,” said Jamie.
So she got things started on a pizza pie that’s got it all, the Woerner Works. “A little bit of veggies, a little bit of meat, a little bit of everything,” said Jamie.
They weren’t kidding about fresh and neither was Jamie about her pizza skills! “Like I said, all my life,” said Jamie. “We make our sauce. We make our pesto sauce, we make our own pizza sauce. We try to make everything fresh here. I tend to put a little bit extra.”
Cheese, pepperoni, salami, and red onion get things started and then come the olives. “We got the kalamata olives,” said Jamie. “Most people have the black olives, but we kind of like the kalamata.”
Jamie adds some artichokes, some more cheese, and throws that bad boy in the oven before getting started on a spectacular sandwich. “This is one of our most popular cold sandwiches,” said Jamie. “It’s called the BLAT.”
This is the Woerner Café take on the BLT, just with turkey and avocado. It starts with bread and some fresh Dijon mustard. Mayo, sprouts, and avocado are followed by smoked turkey. “I mean, I probably overdo it, but I’d kind of rather do that than underdo it,” said Jamie.
Throw on some bacon, tomatoes, greens, and red wine dressing and we’re good to go. Looking fresh in more ways than one!
With all the food prepared it’s time to dig in, starting with that loaded pizza. If you’re particular about pizza, this pie is perfect for you. Those olives pair together with those artichokes just right. And all that nice salty meat makes for a fantastic flavor on that pizza, really giving it a traditional taste and feel. That’s absolutely fantastic. “They just do a spectacular job,” said customer Doug. “Every pizza on the menu is great.”
From there, we’re going to head to our healthier option, the hefty sandwich. “There’s three times more Turkey on this sandwich than anywhere else,” said customer John.
Every element of that sandwich is excellent. The turkey’s good, but what really gets you hooked is that avocado and those bean sprouts, along with that red wine vinaigrette and that mustard. Each little bite you take, you get a little bit of each one of those, and it is amazing. “I can’t find any better place to eat in Fredericksburg for lunch than right here,” said Doug.
And you know a visit to the Woerner Café isn’t complete without a piece of pie. That key lime pie is fluffy and fine, rivaling the pies they make in Key West. This cafe is well worth a check mark on the Texas bucket list because of these incredible, huge, tasty sandwiches and the perfect pizza. A great stop in Fredericksburg, the Woerner Cafe. “It’s got a good reputation,” said John. “It’s got good food. It’s the same every time we come in here. It’s never different. If I can go somewhere and expect the quality that I got before, well I’ll keep coming. And that’s kind of what we’ve experienced here.”
